Lost in Translation: Italian Tourists  Mistake Ethiopian Monarch for Former Italian Ruler

In a bizarre turn of events, Italian tourists in Ethiopia have been seen confusing King Menelik II, a former Ethiopian monarch, as their own leader. The confusion appears to have arisen due to the ongoing raid by Ethiopian security forces on cultural shops and printing shops that are selling Menelik shirts and posters for Adwa.

According to eyewitness accounts, Italian tourists have been seen wandering the streets of Addis Ababa in search of Menelik memorabilia, convinced that he was once the ruler of Italy. “We heard that there was a big sale on Menelik shirts and posters, so we came all the way from Rome to get some,” said Giovanni, a confused tourist.

The confusion has even spilled over into the political sphere, with some Italian politicians reportedly calling for the annexation of Ethiopia based on the mistaken belief that Menelik was once an Italian leader. “It’s clear that Menelik was Italian, and therefore Ethiopia rightfully belongs to us,” said one politician, who wished to remain anonymous.

The Ethiopian government has been quick to condemn the confusion and has vowed to take action against those responsible for spreading false information. “It’s unfortunate that some people are confusing our beloved King Menelik with Italian leaders,” said a government spokesperson. “We want to make it clear that Menelik was Ethiopian through and through, and we will not tolerate any attempts to rewrite history.”

Despite the government’s efforts, confusion over Menelik’s identity continues to persist among some Italian tourists. “I don’t understand why they’re getting so upset,” said another tourist, who wished to remain anonymous. “If Menelik was Ethiopian, then why are they selling Menelik shirts and posters in Italy?”

As the confusion over King Menelik’s identity continues, one thing is clear: the ongoing raid on cultural shops and printing shops in Ethiopia is having unintended consequences, leaving Italian tourists scratching their heads and wondering just who this Menelik guy really was.
