The Gambella Regional Government has announced the imposition of an indefinite curfew in the region, effective July 20, 2023. The curfew prohibits movement from 7:00 PM to 06:00 AM, with the exception of security forces on duty.

The curfew was imposed following reports of violence and loss of life in the region. The regional government has not released any information about the number of casualties, but it has promised to investigate the incidents and hold those responsible accountable.

Local media reports indicate that the clashes broke out earlier this week in two areas of the region. In Gambella town, businesses and offices were closed on July 20, 2023.

The Gambella region has been a volatile region in recent years. In May 2023, at least seven people were killed and more than 10 injured in clashes in Gambella town. Last year, the Gambella People’s Liberation Front and the Oromo Liberation Army jointly launched an attack on the city of Gambella.

The region borders South Sudan and has been affected by the ongoing conflict in that country. The region is also home to more than 480,000 South Sudanese refugees.

The curfew is a measure to try to restore order and security in the region. It is unclear how long the curfew will be in effect.

Here are some additional details about the curfew:

  • The curfew applies to all people and vehicles in the region.
  • The only exceptions to the curfew are for security forces on duty.
  • Individuals are not allowed to carry any weapons during the curfew.
  • Violators of the curfew will be arrested and prosecuted.

The regional government has urged residents to cooperate with the curfew and to report any suspicious activity to the authorities.

The curfew is a sign of the ongoing security challenges in the Gambella region. It remains to be seen how effective the curfew will be in restoring order and security in the region.
