Biniam Girmay’s Historic Hat-Trick in Stage 12 of the Tour de France

In a thrilling display of skill and determination, Eritrean cyclist Biniam Girmay clinched a historic victory in Stage 12 of the Tour de France. This win not only marks a significant milestone in Girmay’s career but also positions him as a trailblazer for African cyclists on the world stage.

A Triumph of Perseverance and Talent

Stage 12, known for its challenging terrain and intense competition, saw Girmay showcase his exceptional cycling prowess. The stage, which covered a grueling distance of 203.6 kilometers from Aurillac to Villeneuve-sur-Lot, featured steep climbs and treacherous descents that tested the mettle of even the most seasoned riders. Girmay, riding for Intermarché-Wanty, navigated these challenges with remarkable finesse, securing his place in the annals of cycling history by out-pacing Wout van Aert (Visma-Lease a Bike) and Arnaud Démare (Arkéa-B&B Hotels) in a thrilling sprint finish.

A Breakthrough Moment for African Cycling

Girmay’s victory is more than just a personal achievement; it is a breakthrough moment for African cycling. As the first African cyclist to win three stages at the Tour de France, Girmay’s success underscores the growing presence and competitiveness of African athletes in a sport traditionally dominated by Europeans. His win serves as an inspiration for aspiring cyclists across the continent, demonstrating that with dedication and hard work, they too can compete at the highest levels.

The Race to the Finish

The race unfolded with dramatic intensity. Girmay stayed strategically positioned throughout, conserving energy for the final push. In the last few kilometers, he made a decisive move, breaking away from the leading pack. His sprint to the finish line was nothing short of spectacular, leaving his competitors trailing in his wake. The Eritrean national flag waved proudly as he crossed the finish line, a symbol of his hard-fought victory and the pride of a nation.

However, race officials relegated both Démare and Mark Cavendish (Astana Qazaqstan) to the back of the bunch sprint for unsafe moves near the barriers, promoting Ackermann (Israel-Premier Tech) to the podium in third and Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck) to fourth. This development only added to the excitement and drama of the stage.

Reactions and Celebrations

The cycling world reacted with widespread acclaim to Girmay’s achievement. Fans, fellow cyclists, and commentators lauded his performance, recognizing the significance of his win. Social media buzzed with congratulatory messages, highlighting the global impact of his success.

“First of all, I would like to say thanks to God for giving me a lot of strength and power. Without God, we cannot do anything, so I’m super happy,” Girmay said in his post-race interview. “Second, I want to say thanks to my teammates. Thank you, everyone. Without them, I cannot prove I am the fastest. I’m super happy.”

Commanding the Green Jersey Competition

The result and additional points gained at the intermediate sprint have given Girmay a commanding lead in the green jersey competition, which he now leads over Philipsen by 111 points. This dominant position further cements his status as one of the leading sprinters in the Tour de France.

“From the start of the Tour, I’ve felt like I knew I could achieve good results if I had the right time and the right wheel. I proved in the last three sprints that if I’m in the right position, I am able to win,” Girmay reflected. “Since I started to wear this green jersey, somehow I felt super fast, especially in my mind. I believe I can prove I’m the best. I’ve had a lot of ups and downs with crashes. But this year I completely changed my training. I hope it continues like this.”

With this landmark victory, Girmay has set a new benchmark for his career and for African athletes in cycling. As the Tour de France continues, all eyes will be on him to see how he capitalizes on this momentum. His performance in Stage 12 has undoubtedly boosted his confidence and solidified his status as a formidable competitor in the cycling world.

Biniam Girmay’s triumph in Stage 12 of the Tour de France is a testament to his exceptional talent, perseverance, and the rise of African athletes in global sports. His victory is not just a personal milestone but a beacon of hope and inspiration for future generations of cyclists from Africa and beyond.
