In today’s digital age, the ability to navigate and utilize information and communication technologies is increasingly important. Recognizing this need, a nationwide initiative in Ethiopia aims to provide digital literacy training to 5 million youth by 2026. This program seeks to equip young people with essential digital skills necessary for education, work, and daily life, ultimately empowering them to leverage technology for economic opportunities and contribute to the country’s development.

The Role of Digital Literacy

Digital literacy encompasses more than just basic computer skills; it includes the ability to find, evaluate, create, and communicate information using digital technologies. As Ethiopia works towards becoming a lower-middle-income nation, enhancing digital literacy among its citizens, particularly the youth, is seen as crucial for fostering economic competitiveness and inclusive growth.

Program Details

This large-scale initiative offers foundational digital skills training over the next three years, focusing on three core areas:

  1. Programming Fundamentals: This course introduces students to the basics of programming, helping them develop logical thinking and problem-solving skills through coding.
  2. Data Science Fundamentals: With the growing importance of data in various sectors, this course provides insights into data collection, analysis, and interpretation, preparing students to make data-driven decisions.
  3. Android Kotlin Developer: As mobile technology continues to expand, this course focuses on Android app development using Kotlin, equipping students with the skills to create mobile applications.

All courses are conducted in English, ensuring that participants gain proficiency in a language widely used in the global tech industry. Upon completion, participants will receive a certificate from Udacity, validating their newly acquired skills. It is important for participants to maintain an active email address throughout the course, as this will be the primary mode of communication and access to course materials.

Application Process

The program is free and open to Ethiopian youth interested in enhancing their digital skills. Applications can be submitted through the EthioCoders platform. The initiative, in partnership with Google and Udacity, offers a Nanodegree that includes practical projects and mentorship from industry professionals.
