Tamirat Tola Wins Gold in Men’s Marathon at Paris 2024, Ending Ethiopia’s 24-Year Drought

Paris, August 10, 2024 – Ethiopian marathoner Tamirat Tola has triumphed in the men’s marathon at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, securing Ethiopia’s first Olympic gold in this event after a 24-year hiatus. Tola’s victory is a historic moment for Ethiopia, as it marks the country’s return to the top of the Olympic marathon podium, a place it last held in 2000.

Tola’s winning time of 2:05:30 saw him break away from a competitive field in the final stages of the race, outpacing rivals from Kenya and Japan. His win is particularly significant as it brings an end to Ethiopia’s long wait for an Olympic gold in the men’s marathon—a gap that has spanned more than two decades.

A Legacy of Marathon Greats

Tamirat Tola’s gold medal continues Ethiopia’s proud tradition of excellence in the Olympic marathon, a legacy that began with the legendary Abebe Bikila. Bikila made history by winning Ethiopia’s first Olympic gold medal in the marathon at the 1960 Rome Olympics, where he ran the entire race barefoot. Four years later, he repeated this feat at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, becoming the first athlete to win back-to-back Olympic marathons.

Following in Bikila’s footsteps, Mamo Wolde claimed the gold medal in the marathon at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, further solidifying Ethiopia’s dominance in long-distance running. Then, in 2000, Gezahegne Abera won the marathon at the Sydney Olympics, adding another chapter to Ethiopia’s storied history in the event.

Tola’s victory in Paris now joins these legendary achievements, marking Ethiopia’s return to Olympic marathon glory after 24 years. His success not only honors the legacy of his predecessors but also inspires a new generation of Ethiopian runners to aspire to greatness on the world stage.

Known for his strategic race execution and powerful finishing speed, Tola’s victory in Paris is a crowning achievement in his career. It cements his place among Ethiopia’s long list of marathon legends, ensuring his legacy will be remembered for years to come.
