Ethiopian football has lost one of its most iconic figures, Asrat Haile, affectionately known as “The Sword.” A formidable player and revered coach, Haile passed away after a prolonged illness, for which he had been receiving treatment. His departure leaves a deep void in Ethiopian sports, marking the end of an era for a man who helped shape the nation’s football legacy both on and off the field.

Asrat Haile’s career spanned decades, during which he played for and coached multiple clubs and the Ethiopian national team. Known for his resilience and competitive spirit, Haile led Ethiopia’s Walya Antelopes to their historic East and Central African Championship (CECAFA Cup) victory in 2001, propelling the nation 17 places up in the FIFA rankings. This achievement not only underscored his tactical prowess but also his dedication to his team and country.

Throughout his tenure, Haile managed to navigate the ups and downs of Ethiopian football with an unwavering commitment to excellence. His career included stints with renowned clubs such as St. George, where he secured numerous trophies and established himself as both a respected player and an esteemed coach.

Haile’s influence extended beyond trophies and titles. Known for his candid insights, he was unafraid to speak his mind on the state of Ethiopian football, challenging peers and successors to uphold high standards. In a notable 2020 interview, Haile openly critiqued then-head coach Abraham Mebratu, describing his leadership of the national team as lacking in progress. His willingness to hold others accountable reflected his deep passion for elevating Ethiopian football to new heights.

In May 2023, a fundraising campaign organized by his daughter, Ruth Haile, brought to light the financial challenges associated with his medical care. The outpouring of support from fans, former players, and the Ethiopian sports community underscored his lasting impact and the affection with which he was regarded.

Asrat Haile’s legacy as “The Sword” remains a beacon of inspiration for aspiring Ethiopian athletes. His life and career serve as a testament to perseverance, strength, and dedication, qualities that will continue to inspire generations.
